The Artist Behind the Work
Mark Thompson
I'm a Canadian artist creating in rural Ontario, shaped by the world just outside my door—the woodlands, changing seasons, a quiet river and nearby waterfall, and the personalities of the animals around the property. Those peaceful surroundings stand in contrast to years spent working in high-stress environments. Painting became a place where the two worlds could meet.
Whether I'm building texture with a palette knife or finding inspiration in something as ordinary as a chicken standing in the yard, each painting begins with a feeling, a story, or a moment. My work explores resilience, service, faith, memory, humour, and everyday life. Over time, it has developed into a style I call Expressive Abstract Realism—a blend of recognizable subjects with movement, emotion, texture, and abstraction.
